Pietro Quintino Sella is a designer and researcher based in Lisbon. Pietro’s work tackles social, economic, and environmental issues by combining theoretical ideas, modern aesthetics, and practical design solutions. Each project aims to increase action by revealing what is often overlooked or hidden.
Blending the realms of design, art, and environmentalism, Pietro conducts research, designs, and creates interventions that often challenge conventional perspectives. With a background in industrial design,
Pietro began his career as an independent designer, collaborating with professionals while developing his own products. This experience has since expanded his expertise across diverse design disciplines, including research, concept development, sustainable product development, and navigating the complexities of bringing a product to market. His work encompasses a wide array of outputs, including social design initiatives, art installations, products that push boundaries, innovative packaging solutions, and brand narratives.
Pietro’s products aim to tell a story about humanity and our connection to the world around us. His work is profoundly shaped by the cultural similarities and contradictions of his upbringing between Italy and Portugal. Growing up, he navigated the complexities of identity as he straddled two cultures.
He experienced the duality of being perceived as the Portuguese kid in Italy and the Italian kid in Portugal, which instilled in him a sense of otherness. This duality inspired him to create products that reflect a blend of cultural influences, fostering empathy for others who feel excluded through his art installations
and design products.
His works are featured in international design communities such as The Milan Design Week, The Dutch Design Week, Antenna Conference, Potentiale Design Fair, NYC Wanted Design, Core 77 magazine, and InteriorDesign magazine.
Pietro Quintino Sella holds a Bachelor of Industrial Design from IUAV in Venice, Italy. Subsequently, he obtained a Master’s degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in New York, where he also participated in an exchange program in Global Innovation Design at the Royal College of Art in London.
His master's thesis work, The Subline, which was the culmination of his three years of study, won the NYC X Design Award and was presented at Dutch Design Week, where he was recognized as one of the top global graduates of 2021.
